The wall is part of the system
A loudspeaker radiates energy toward the listener and toward nearby room boundaries. Low-frequency sound reflecting from the wall behind the speaker returns to the room and combines with the direct sound.
Where the reflected wave is in phase, the result can be more output. Where it is out of phase, the two can partially cancel and create a dip. This interaction is often called speaker-boundary interference.
Closer can mean more bass
Placing a speaker near a solid wall usually increases low-frequency output because the wall reduces the space into which the speaker radiates. A corner adds more boundaries and can produce still more output.
More bass is not automatically better. It can help a small speaker that sounds lean, or exaggerate a room mode that is already too strong. The useful test is whether the response at your listening position becomes more even and the music sounds more balanced.
Farther does not automatically mean cleaner
Pulling a speaker into the room changes the path length of the reflected sound. That moves the frequency where the strongest wall-related cancellation is likely to occur; it does not simply remove the wall from the measurement.
The predicted dip is related to a quarter wavelength of the speaker-to-wall distance, but other boundaries, the speaker design and the listening position also contribute. A calculation is a starting hypothesis, not proof of what your seat hears.
A controlled 20–30 cm experiment
- Check the manual for rear-port, cable and cooling clearance requirements.
- Mark both speaker positions and save a baseline reading.
- Move both speakers the same 20–30 cm toward or away from the wall.
- Keep the listening seat, volume, toe-in, playback route and room state unchanged.
- Replay the same familiar music, paying attention to bass weight, individual notes and lower-midrange body.
- Take another Room Tuner reading from the same phone position and compare the evidence.
- Repeat the promising position before making it permanent.
What should you look for?
A better position may reduce an obvious bass rise, recover part of a dip or make bass notes more consistent in level. It may also change warmth through the lower midrange. Do not judge only the overall amount of bass.
Make sure the change works for both speakers and does not harm stereo symmetry. If one speaker must sit much closer to a side wall, the room may affect the two channels differently.
Rear ports are not the whole story
A rear port needs enough physical clearance to work as its manufacturer intended, but wall interaction is not exclusive to rear-ported speakers. Sealed and front-ported speakers also radiate low-frequency energy into the room and interact with boundaries.
Follow the manual for minimum clearance, then use measurement and listening to choose between the practical positions available.
If the seat is causing the problem
Speaker movement changes how the room is excited, while seat movement changes where you sample the resulting sound field. If several reasonable speaker positions leave the same difficult bass region, test a forward or backward seat move as a separate experiment.
Do not combine both moves in one comparison. Change one variable, remeasure, and keep the improvement only if it repeats.
