Why the listening seat matters
At low frequencies, sound reflected between the room boundaries creates areas of higher and lower pressure. A seat can land near a peak where one bass region sounds heavy, or near a null where part of the bass seems to disappear. Moving forward or backward can change that balance without changing the speakers, amplifier, source or EQ.
The listening position also affects the timing and strength of reflections reaching your ears. That is why a sensible seat is part of the sound system, not just a place to put the sofa.
A repeatable seat-comparison method
- Choose 2–6 realistic seats. Include positions you would actually keep. A theoretically perfect chair in a doorway is not a useful winner.
- Name and mark each position. Use simple labels such as “Sofa centre” or “Chair by window.” Mark the phone location as well as the seat.
- Freeze the rest of the system. Keep the same volume, playback route, target, speaker positions, room setup and phone orientation.
- Complete round one. Measure each candidate once, following the same phone-height and placement method.
- Complete round two. Return to every seat and repeat it. This checks whether the first result was stable enough to trust.
- Interpret the outcome honestly. A position may win overall, two may be effectively tied, or each may involve a different trade-off.
Why measure every seat twice?
A single capture can be disturbed by phone placement, a changed volume setting, a passing noise or a measurement that simply does not repeat. Two readings do not make the phone a laboratory microphone, but they make the comparison more defensible.

What makes a fair comparison?
Only the seat should change. Do not adjust the volume between positions, move a speaker halfway through, switch target curves, change the AirPlay route or hold the phone differently. Those changes answer a different question.
Keep doors and curtains in the same state, avoid talking during the sweep, and place the phone around normal ear height. If the room changes during the session, repeat the affected measurements.
What “best” really means
The winning position is the strongest result among the seats you sampled, with this system, setup, target and session. It is not a universal claim about the room. A new subwoofer position, crossover, speaker layout or large furniture change can alter the ranking.

What to try after choosing a seat
Put the seat in the selected position, then take a normal room reading there. Work through the highest-value next move before reaching for EQ. Speaker distance from the wall, symmetry, subwoofer position and a repeatable multi-position reading can all matter.
If the sofa cannot move, reverse the experiment: keep the listening position fixed and test practical speaker or subwoofer positions one at a time.
